For my readings, I chose to read the article Stolen Snow Shovels and Good Ideas: The Search for and Generation of Local Knowledge in the Social Media Community. I found this article intriguing as it got me thinking about the online communities built within my hometown, Tallahassee, and how much I participated in them without realizing what I was doing. I have compiled a list of the ones I found helpful, as well as ones I enjoyed after stumbling upon them going over my Facebook, below:
- Are we Dating the Same Guy? TLH:
I have participated in this group as a lurker for about a year now. I have not seen any men I know on there personally, but it is a relatively supportive group of women who try to look out for one another amidst the dating scene of Tallahassee, Florida. It is not a group without its flaws, but I have seen a lot of uplifting comments and have even seen some of my friends turn to the group when they needed information on bad relationships they had experienced. Mostly, I'm just there for the tea as I have not interacted myself, but I would interact if I felt I had important and relevant information to contribute.
- Fest Friends
This group is more focused on the general Florida area, as it is about a music festival that happens in Gainsville in October, but a lot of good TLH specific information goes through too. This page was started as a space to ask questions about FEST, get recommendations on food, and lodging, and recommend where to get passes once they have sold out. However, it is an online community that has continued year-to-year and has expanded to information about the general punk/ska/hardcore scenes throughout Florida. Lots of bands going on tour post their show dates in that group and people often go there for a variety of music advice. I have interacted in this group as more than a lurker throughout the years, with any questions or uplifting words I had.
- Tallahassee Restaraunt Reviews
This community focuses specifically on (usually) local spots around town and people's dining experiences within them. Sometimes the reviews are really sweet, uplifting, or informative. Other times, I am only there for the angry Karens going after each other in the comments. I have not posted any reviews myself as the comments can truly get a little heated, but I enjoy reading other people's reviews.
Groups I may consider joining:
- What's Happening in Tallahassee? Seems like a good spot to get and share event information.
- Cat Mom's of Tallahassee: who doesn't love to decompress over cute pictures of cats and share/gush over their own fur babies? It would also give me a place to post the many many many cat pictures I have on my phone.
Overall, I think these groups offer a lot of solid Tallahassee/Florida information. It is very interesting to see such a collection of interests and needs within the city and it's nice to know that information and resources are out there for most whatever a person could need.
You share some great Facebook groups, Jorann! I am only a part of "Living Tallahassee," and there seems to be a lot of information shared in there. Have you heard of it or are a part of it? I would image it's similar to "What's Happening in Tallahassee?"
